WSU Everett awards first fellowship to support innovative research and teaching

Washington State University Everett has awarded the inaugural Judy Huie-Rogers Faculty Research Fellowship to Dr. Shih-Lien Lu, head of the campus’s cybersecurity program and a faculty member in the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture.

Funded in June 2024, the endowment provides ongoing support for faculty research, with a $1,000 annual award that can be used for expenses such as travel to academic conferences. Dr. Lu will be the first to benefit from this new investment and plans to share his research on methods to reduce the overhead of mitigating the DRAM Rowhammer Attack at either 2025 ACM/IEEE Symposium on Microarchitecture (MICRO-58) or the Workshop on DRAM Security (DRAMSec) this fall. His work advances the field of hardware security and continues his impactful contributions to cybersecurity innovation.

“Supporting faculty in funding their research as well as assisting them with travel to present their work at conferences is vital for their academic and professional development,” said Dr. Sergey Lapin, Vice Chancellor of Research. “We are very happy to have Dr. Lu as part of WSU Everett’s faculty body. He is contributing not only to our knowledge but his entire industry through this work.”

The Judy Huie-Rogers Faculty Research Fellowship was established through a generous endowment from Judy Huie Rogers, a proud WSU alumna and longtime advocate for education and innovation. A 1974 graduate with a degree in computer science, Rogers built a career in software and aerospace before becoming a public school teacher. She now serves as a member of the WSU Everett Advisory Board. Her endowment is one of several she has established across the WSU system, and Everett is honored to be among the beneficiaries.

“This fellowship speaks volumes about Judy’s belief in the transformative power of education and the role faculty play in enriching the student experience,” said WSU Everett Chancellor Paul Pitre. “We are proud to recognize Dr. Lu’s research and excited about the future contributions this fellowship will help support.” The endowment is open to additional contributions from those who want to help expand its impact on WSU Everett faculty.
